Beginning with the 3rd grade year, a new set of foundational skills are introduced that are mission critical to future math success: multiplication & division facts, and FRACTIONS.
In grades 3-6, students build an extremely important foundational knowledge of fractions as they learn how to model and perform operations with them. Success in fractions = success in upper elementary and middle school math.
But many students have trouble understanding fractions. According to 2022 national test results, last year 74% of 4th grade students were not able to correctly answer true or false questions asking them to compare fractions. This is a skill typically taught in 3rd grade, and one of the easier fraction skills they will learn!
If your child needs help understanding fractions, you are in the right place. Fractions Unlocked is the roadmap they need to build a strong foundation and achieve success in working with fractions, from understanding the basics through advanced problem solving.

Fractions Unlocked: Introduction to Fractions
In Fractions Unlocked: Introduction to Fractions, students are introduced to fractions and begin problem solving with them through a series of 10 lessons. This course is all about establishing a solid foundation for working with fractions so that your student can be more successful in math now and in the future.
Check out the breakdown of the course below to see how your student can go from learning what a fraction is to problem solving.
Lesson 1:
What is a Fraction?
In the first lesson, students are introduced to fractions learning the definition and parts of a fraction and investigating the "part-whole" relationship that fractions represent. They will see multiple examples to instill the concept that fractions can represent a vast variety of things both concrete and abstract. Students are also introduced to the different models that will be used throughout the course.
Lesson 2:
How to Draw Area Models
Area models, or shapes, are commonly used in problems involving fractions. In fact when most people think of a fraction model, they picture a shape that has been equally divided. Students are frequently required to model fractions, but never really taught strategies for drawing and partitioning shapes correctly. In this lesson, students learn best practices for drawing and partitioning rectangles, circles and even a few triangles.
Lesson 3:
Exploring Fractions with Area Models
In lesson 3 students learn how to represent a given fraction using an area model as well as how to write a fraction from a given model. This skill is first practiced with unit fractions and then expanded to include other fractions.
Lesson 4:
Hands-On Activity with Fraction Strips
Lesson 4 is an activity lesson with blank fraction tiles, sometimes called fraction strips. In this hands-on lesson students learn how to think outside the box as they both identify and build halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths using the blank tiles.
Lesson 5:
Exploring Fractions on a Number Line
Did you know that most students do not think of fractions as numbers? After this lesson, they will! Students will explore fractions on a number line as they learn where fractions are located on a number line, how to count with fractions, and how to construct their own number line and label points to represent a given fractions.
Lesson 6:
Expressing Whole Numbers as Fractions
Now that students have an understanding of fractions as numbers with a place on the number line, they can move on to learn that whole numbers can also be expressed as fractions. This lesson focuses on building knowledge of fractions equal to 0, less than 1, equal to 1 and greater than 1.
Lesson 7:
Exploring Fractions as Sets
Fractions do not always represent something that can be easily modeled with a shape! Fractions can also name part of a group of objects or even people. In this lesson, students will learn how to model such fractions by using a set model as well as how to write a fraction to name a specific part of a given set.
Lesson 8:
Comparing Fractions
When comparing two fractions, you can’t simply compare the size of the numbers that make up the fraction. Lesson 8 teaches students strategies for comparing fractions that have a) the same denominator, b) the same numerator and c) different numerators and different denominators.
Lesson 9:
Working with Equivalent Fractions
Students expand not only their fractions sense, but also their math vocabulary as they learn about equivalent fractions. In this lesson students learn how to identify and generate equivalent fractions using area models and number lines.
Lesson 10:
Problem Solving with Fractions
The ultimate demonstration of math skill mastery is to successfully understand and apply it to real world situations. In lesson 10 students are challenged to think critically with their fraction skills they have gained throughout the course and apply their knowledge to solve word problems where the new math they have learned meets the real world.
Introduction to Fractions for 3rd and 4th Grade Students
Fractions Unlocked: Introduction to Fractions was developed based on fraction skills usually introduced in the 3rd grade. However, many times when students in subsequent grades struggle with fractions it can be due to the fact that they never understood fractions in any of their previous grades to begin with and need to go back and review. This course is perfect for current and rising 3rd or 4th graders who need to gain a better understanding of fractions.
How does it work?
Each lesson has two videos and a printable homework sheet, all designed to follow the evidence-based teaching practice of explicit instruction in which new math skills are taught through initial instruction, teacher-guided practice, and then independent practice.
